Thoughts on Workshops

You’ve got to do your research.

There are some killer workshops out there that give photographers invaluable tools to take their businesses to the next level; whether that be through better shooting techniques or networking opportunities.

What we aren’t fans of, are photographers who give up on workshops because, “I spent too much money on workshops in the past and they just didn’t do anything for my business.”

Here’s the deal folks. We need to be smarter about where we allocate our ‘business development’ money.

Think of it like gear.

You scour blogs and tech forums to see what your best options are. You interview friends and experts in the industry regarding their opinion on certain pieces. You go to Calumet or B&H and actually interact with the product. You find examples of what the gear is capable of doing.  Then you pick one that best fits your needs and start saving cash.

Why are workshops any different?

What do you need to get out of these workshops to make it worth the investment? Or were you hoping the workshop leaders were going to give you that answer for you?

Do you need someone to show you the ropes on how to get the most out of your shoots and find your style? There are a gazillion shooting workshops out there. Find the one that best fits your personality and vibe.

Which workshops are known for RESULTS? Do they have a good reputation among past attendees for getting the job done? If you don’t know … ask around. People aren’t shy!

What is your motivation for going? Let’s be honest…There is a certain amount of “celebrity” in the photography community. So if you’re going to a workshop to meet and “bask in the glory” of one of your photography heroes, it’s a pretty pricey backstage pass. Not that they don’t offer great workshops, but what are YOU really going for? If it’s just to meet the people, then go to some industry events and meet them. Or start commenting on their blog, or send them a nice email…there’s lots of ways to meet the photographers you idolize…there’s no need to pay a premium JUST to meet them.

For us, we wanted a workshop that would help photographers hone in on where they wanted to take their business and help identify the kind of clients they wanted to be working with. We only wanted to focus on one thing: building a stronger foundation through business development and brand strategy.

That’s why we created TH!NK TANKS.

TH!NK TANKS aren’t for everyone. And that’s ok. So…who are they for? Glad you asked.

They are for people who are ready to get real with themselves, dig in deep and begin making the changes they need to really succeed (whatever your definition of success is). People who want to establish new focus, depth, structure and meaning for their business. Our TH!NK TANKS are for those who are ready to answer the really tough questions they’ve been running from and be equipped to confidently move forward. People who need to create a strategy and plan that they can execute with a team behind them to keep them accountable and to assist them for months to come. If this resonates with you, we will be announcing more TH!NK TANKS throughout the year, click here to be notified whenever we announce a new TH!NK TANK. Or you can hire us for your own customized 1-on-1 TH!NK TANK. It would be our pleasure to help you build, develop or improve your photography business.

Find a workshop that addresses your immediate needs and take a chance. If you’ve done your homework, you can’t fail.
