Your role at B!G DEAL BRANDING?
Oddly enough, I’m both the “research person” AND the “people person”. I know, I know…That doesn’t make sense! But I REALLY love learning about people and marketing research is basically learning about people in a structured setting. So if you need a survey made, or a focus group ran…I’m totally your girl! But if you’d like to have a cup of coffee and chat about your favorite episodes of Friends, or (at this stage in my life) the various methods of dealing with a teething infant or crazy toddler…I’m also your girl. ;)
Born and raised?
Escondido, CA (north San Diego county)
What is your favorite thing about being a mom?
Getting to know my little girls and seeing how dang cool they are, knowing that I’m making the most amazing investment a person can make into the future, and expanding my understanding of the world and people around me. I think I was pretty narrow-minded prior to being a mother. It’s brought a new and bigger perspective to how I see the world.
How do you like your coffee? Black, Cream, Cream AND Sugar?
Cream and sugar. Two cups please.
Pop Tarts or cereal?
Neither. Bagel. Oooh…or croissant.
What caused you to start See Jane Advocate?
I was pretty involved and passionate about social justice issues prior to having my kids and once I was a mom I didn’t want that part of me to end or even really be put on hold. Rather, I wanted to find a way that I could incorporate those values into my life as a mom. I’m also super passionate about empowering other people to figure out how they can use their specific gifts and talents to make a difference in the world, so Jane is the perfect combo of those two things. I’m getting to make a difference while empowering others to make a difference too. I also really enjoy encouraging other moms to find ways to escape the mom crazies that settle in when you exclusively think and talk about baby stuff too much…Whenever I get to that place I know it’s time for a new post.
We hear you like research (you big nerd), what about market research totally melts your butter?
It’s the relational part of research that makes me excited. I know that sounds like an oxymoron- “relational research”…but marketing research is all about delving into what people think and feel about your idea or product. So you get to talk to people, figure out what they think and why they think that way. It’s like business-focused psychology and I think it’s FASCINATING. Most of the time people’s answers really surprise you and I think that’s pretty fascinating too…we all see things so differently!
What got you interested in photography?
Two things. 1) I love capturing emotions…moments that slip by in real life and live forever in a photograph. 2) I love making women feel beautiful. I love taking a photo that makes other girls say “I wish I was THAT girl”…because all of us deep down want to be THAT girl.
Craziest photo shoot you’ve ever done?
I don’t know if the shoot itself was super crazy but it’s the craziest thing I’ve ever made my subject do: I once made a model hike through waist-high brush and climb a tree in 4 inch heels to get the shot I wanted. I felt bad but the shot turned out AWESOME and she looked super bad ass. Totally worth it, right?
What’s your favorite coffee shop in O-side?
Just found a new one! It’s called Petite Madeline Bakery and it sucked me in with it’s french-ness. It transports me back to my pre-family days of traveling Europe.
What’s the sexiest thing about your husband?
His confidence. He has the confidence and swagger of those jerks that all women are attracted to (you know what I’m talking about, right?)…without being a jerk. It’s the perfect combo. And when he surfs I melt. Seriously.
Where is your favorite place to go on a date?
SUSHI! Any sushi place that is near the beach is a WIN for us on date-night.
Out of all the places you’ve traveled, which place was the most adventurous?
Sheesh. Tough question. I think the answer has to be Albania. I spent 5 weeks there when I was 19 and it was nothing if not an adventure!
What is about the water that you love so much?
The peace and tranquility of it. When I’m in the water, the rest of my life disappears for a few minutes and there is only the water, sky and me. It’s like therapy.
If you could be any character in fiction, whom would you be?
I LOVE to read…love it, Love it, LOVE IT. Now, I know that this is going to make me seem crazy and SUPER nerdy, but my answer just has to be Eowyn from the Lord of the Rings. I know I know! SOO nerdy right? But hear me out…She begins as a woman who pines after adventure and greatness. She wants to spend her life doing grand, heroic and amazing things. She says her greatest fear is “to stay behind bars, until use and old age accept them, and all chance of great deeds is gone beyond recall or desire.” She then bravely rides into the greatest battle of the book and saves the day by slaying a giant, flying, monster thing and the ghost/bad guy that is riding it. But after it’s over she realizes that perhaps that is not where her heart lies after all. She unexpectedly falls in love with someone and the book says: “Then the heart of Éowyn changed, or else she understood it……’I will be a shieldmaiden no longer, nor vie with the great Riders, nor take joy only in the songs of slaying. I will be a healer, and love all things that grow and are not barren.’”
I relate to her on SO many levels (except maybe on the “taking joy in…slaying” part), and think she’s probably the best, most complicated and most overlooked character in the book. LOVE HER. Now commence judgement on my nerdy-ness.
